Lena Horne – Love – Stormy Weather, By John Siscoe

This lovely clip of the fabulous Lena Horne in Ziegfield Follies (1946) is a joy and a treasure: a reminder of just how talented she was. It is also a reminder that, for all her star quality, Horne would never be offered a major role in a Hollywood movie. Horne’s left-wing sympathies were a major impediment, but her fatal flaw was being black. The Production Code’s prohibition of on-screen interracial relationships condemned many a promising career to the sidelines. Lena Horne, who died only two years ago, went on to a fulfilling career on Broadway and television, but Hollywood’s loss was everyone’s. We’re lucky to have this.
