UK’s Dub Pistols Have Depth, By Holly Homan

The UK’s Dub Pistols have just released a video for their song “Alive.” The visuals in the video are intriguing as the band performs with a distinct reggae sound, but with a dub back beat.

The song does, however, get monotonous after awhile. The overdub, electronic sounds don’t vary at all so it’s just the same sound over and over. The message I got from the song, as the lyrics are chanted over and over, “you are alive, don’t get buried alive,” is that if you are alive, take an active role in life to bring about positive change or you’ll be buried alive. In that sense, the song, and therefore the band, have depth which is woefully lacking in almost all popular music these days. Throughout the song there is a powerful horn section, but the dub/electronica part detracts from it with it’s sheer repetitiveness. Still, as I said, the song and the band have depth as does the video, and that in and of itself make this a worthwhile video.
