Hey Fartknocker, Welcome to the New Millennium

By Nina Shen Rastogi

After months of chatter, MTV confirmed yesterday that Beavis and Butt-Head, those 1990s arbiters of suckage, will return to television this summer, well rested and presumably prepped to deconstruct a whole new generation of music videos.

But do the original MTV morons make sense in 2011? The series’ air of listless, juvenile nihilism seems almost quaint in today’s era of millennial strivers. Meanwhile, the New York Post reported last July that the channel will be using the new B and B episodes as a “backdoor” (heh-heh-heh) to start showing music videos again—a concept that seems as antiquated and nostalgic as the show itself.

Complete story is here.

Amazing! Never thought I’d see the day….though it’s hard to conceive of just what it’ll be “like” at this point.

Yeah, with Alice-in-Chains gone, it’s hard to imagine a new video that could be as inspiring to the characters. Beavis and Butthead critique Kanye West? Well, I can’t deny that I’m curious.

“Come…to Butthead.”

Except that Alice in Chains AREN’T gone [anymore], and in fact had a big-selling/well-reviewed (!) album just a year or so ago.

Of course Layne is dead, but perhaps there’s just enough post-Tool/Limp Bizkit “Rape Rock” shite still around to make things interesting.

And maybe Beavis will turn out to be PRECISELY the “critic” to reduce Kanye West to an appropriate level of “duh-hey!” obviousness that will allow me to enjoy his music at long last. I’d love to watch him try, at any rate!

Plus, if “Music Video” is truly about to make a comeback from The Dustbin of History, then now IS the time for Beavis’ Return! LOL [I wonder whether they’ll debut the new B + B episodes at 12:01am on August 1st, which will be the exact moment of MTV’s 30th anniversary?]

As you say, Miz Cory, “Come….to Butt-head!”

You should post this to the usual suspects.

I’ll cc: East Portland Blog as well, perhaps he can get a few EPB folks to leap aboard this downbound train!

B + B’s return is certainly High Concept Media Manipulation! And no less calorically filling than “Reality TV”.
